The Town of Weston, MA, has about 2000 acres of conservation land held undeveloped in perpetuity for the benefit of the townsfolk. A land trust, formed in 1955, the Weston Forest & Trail Association (WFTA) has been instrumental in securing the many parcels of land and attracting donor support to manage the land.
Through an arrangement with a land-management contractor in the town, the WFTA pays for the maintenance of a trail system of over 100 miles of trails on the conservation land. These trails are spread over a number of different sections of the town.
We have provided for the WFTA a comprehensive conservation land and trail system management plan. Each of the components of each protected parcel were inventoried and assessed. We built out a matrix for tracking work and maintaining proper protocols for the different areas. With this tool, the WFTA will be able to more sustainably manage the trail system and ensure that it is well-tended into the future.
